interview: Author Scott Nicholson + kindle giveaway!

Written by Darlyn At Tuesday, November 02, 2010
Hi everyone! We have Scott Nicholson, paranormal thriller author at Darlyn & Books today as a part of his Kindle Giveaway Blog Tour. It's really exciting to have him again here. If you all remember, he wrote for a guest post at Darlyn & Books entitled "The New Era of Reading" a couple of month ago and I also had his book reviewed; The Red Church. There's the giveaway details at the end of the interview. Enjoy!

D: It’s been two months since your Kindle Giveaway Blog Tour began. How do you feel?

SN: I’m enjoying it a lot. I’ve made some new friends and led people to new book blogs, and only a couple of times have I had those “Where am I today?” moments. It has taken away from my writing time, but in the new publishing era, book bloggers are the center of the action.

D: I think you did a great jump start on the phenomenon of Kindle/E-readers and e-books. Everyone’s talking/discussing/twitting about Scott Nicholson Kindle Giveaway around blogosphere. How do you take it? It’s a good thing right? (And not because the readers only want a free Kindle *wink*)

SN: We all dig free stuff, and one of the tricky things is some people on the tour don’t buy e-books yet because they don’t have a kindle. But I think many of the people who don’t win will probably buy one by Christmas. I actually got a bit of a late start because I’ve only been doing this 10 months, but I immediately saw all the benefits of the new era—the most important being the immediate connection with readers.

D: It’s amazing how you setting up the 90 Days Blog Tour and it’s nonstop. WOW. I’ve been around reading your posts on other blogs as well and every day is a new thing we get from you, very refreshing. If I were you, it’s hard to keep it real and organized but you did really great. How you did you do it? Got any extra hands?

SN: The only hard part was personally contacting probably 250 bloggers to set up dates. I didn’t have a list or a plan, I just started prowling the Internet. This whole idea was born in mid-July and originally I was going to give away one paper book per stop, then I realized that wasn’t my audience now. Sane writers generally do one-week blog tours, or one month at the most, but I wasn’t going to promote just one book, I was going to talk about the entire Scott Nicholson universe, which had never been revealed in all its strange, kaleidoscopic splendor. Plus I figured at some point I’d fail spectacularly and at least provide some entertainment.

D: Okay, let’s talk about your amazing books. I’ve read The Red Church and it’s brilliant and planning to read Drummer Boy for Halloween. At first I thought it’s just horror and scary but it has thrills at the same time. All your books have the same elements and keep me wondering if you write what scares you or assume that it will scare your readers when you wrote them? Do you plot the mystery, characters and everything too?

SN: Well, I don’t really plot, and I borrow a lot from local legends, and my core work is definitely paranormal and supernatural thrillers, but the new era and publishing my own work has allowed me to branch out in ways that would be nearly impossible in conventional publishing. I can do anything I want and all I have to do is convince you to give it a try. But the reader is the ultimate boss, and readers will tell me what sorts of things I should be writing and which things I should quit instantly.

D: Just want to hear out your opinion. Yes, we know E-books are a new era. But what about the price? They are expensive as the printed books and not everyone can afford to have e-readers. How can we reduce the entire e-books price and make them cheaper and affordable? (I’m not being pessimist but it’s a fuss among readers. We can’t wait for free stuff forever).

SN: Well, e-reader prices are already dropping, and so are e-book prices, but it’s not something you’d noticed unless you really track the trends and data. The evolution is accelerating faster than all the pundits predicted, but the pundits have been wrong about practically everything. The iPad was supposed to be the publisher’s savior and compete with Kindle, but it actually secured the Kindle app as the default reader of choice and spurred sales of Kindle books. Not many people are using the iBookstore. It was just another in a series of mistakes by publishers, but they have it tough and I can understand why they seek to protect what they know, because change is very threatening to anything that has a “tradition.”

The writers, readers, and publishers who are adapting the fastest have no investment in the old system, whether it’s the nostalgia of paper books or the dubious “legitimacy” of being accepted by New York. What’s really cool to me is that right now a reader can buy basically everything I’ve ever written for about the price of one hardcover book.

D: So what’s next? The tour will end at the end of the month. Do you have any upcoming projects you can tell us about? Any new book in progress?

SN: I launched four or five books while I’ve been on tour, and I haven’t really had time to promote them much or get out review copies. I just released the crime thriller Disintegration yesterday as a 99 cent special for a limited time. The next book is Cursed!, a fun paranormal romance co-authored with Kindle bestseller J.R. Rain that should be out this month. Then I have a few short-story bundles for winter as I finish the next book in the October Girls series.

D: So, are we going to know you as a paranormal thriller writer forever? Any plan to change writing style or genre?

SN: Well, I just remembered I have two new graphic novels out, Grave Conditions and Dirt. Grave Conditions features J.A. Konrath, Brian Keene, Stephen Susco, Jonathan Maberry and more, and Dirt has my adapted short stories. I should have my first children’s book out very soon—“If I Were Your Monster,” with art by Lee Davis. We’re working on another one now. And I’ve already started a sequel to As I Die Lying but it will probably be spring before it’s done.

D: Okay, last but not least. What is your normal day as when you are not writing? Or are you writing every day?

SN: Well, I’m a full-time newspaper reporter and I love my job but of course I’d rather be doing my own thing. But I was thinking about this just the other day, how right now I don’t have time to be successful. If I were a huge bestseller, it would put a lot of demands on me and I want to have some more books out and do my own thing for a while longer before there are “expectations.” One thing’s for sure, this indie game is a lot better business model for a writer than the old way, where you were shooting craps and had little chance at a future. Sure, there are a handful of millionaire bestsellers, but the story of most writers is that they died sick and broke, long forgotten by their publishers. Independent e-books are as close as a writer can get to a real pension fund.

D: Last one. Promise. What you love most about Halloween? Is there any spectacular activity or any traditions in your family on Halloween?

SN: Well, I like Halloween but Thanksgiving is still my favorite holiday. Halloween is 365 for me. I never have a problem putting on a mask, and it’s even more fun when it’s not the one socially acceptable time to do it.

D: Any last word before we wrap it up?

SN: Tater tots. But that’s two words. Thanks for hosting, Darlyn, and good luck with the Kindle giveaways, everyone. I wish I had a hundred to give you.

Thanks so much Scott for spending some time here!

  14. Great interview. I think you're right about many of the people who won't win having bought a Kindle by Christmas. The only reason I haven't got a Kindle (or other e-reader) yet is because I want to test-drive the best rated ones before I buy one, and I can't do that because they aren't available in my country. A free one would be a different matter, since it's not going to cost me any money, but if I don't win, I'll simply wait until my next trip abroad and then get one.

  15. Wow great interview. I am not among the Kindle era, but I do have an iPad, I just don't use it to read on. I guess in a way I am still old school and love holding a book in my hand. Still, if I had a Kindle I would probably use it. So I definitely want in on the giveaway!

  16. I've heard your opinion on the iPad & the Kindle but I'm just curious as to why everyone seems to dismiss Nook. I know a couple of people that have one & they love it yet everyone else seems to think that Kindle is the 'it' e-reader to have. Is that just because the Nook is one step behind the Kindle or is there something else going on?

  19. Okay, I have been traversing several pages and rejections and etc. here on this getting to know Scott Nicholson. It is even more interesting with all the Halloween links. I really like that Thanksgiving is your favorite holiday. It is mine also, and every year I grieve at how it is so bypassed from Halloween to Christmas. Thanks is between these, especially if halloween is the rest of the year. Thanks for honestly revealing that your year 365 is halloween cause that is a scary thing being honest about such a condition. *snicker* Maybe I can have a chance to win the Kindle in the giveaway, but for sure I have had occasion to visit many of your pages while trying to get my computer to let me leave a comment. You are worth it. What success means to me? Honestly professing that halloween is your life 365 and getting followers from your work.

  21. Good interview.

I believe Teawench asked about the Nook. Just my two cents, but I think it's not the "in" reader because it is associated with B&N. They were the one bookstore who could have competed with Amazon at the beginning, but they refused to change their business model. Now, they are still trying to play catch up. It will take a lot of work on their part to get back market share because Amazon has already established itself as "the" e-reader company.

  29. A lot of the discussions about ebooks versus paperbacks seem to imply that it has to be either one or the other. I own quite a lot of paperbacks and hardbacks but I got myself a Kindle earlier this year and I love it. It's convenient, you can take it with you, it gives you the opportunity to buy inexpensive books. However, "real" books have other advantages. A beautifully designed and bound book appeals not just to our mental faculties but to our senses. It's a work of art and we enjoy it not just for its content but for its shape, texture, and form, much like a painting. So why not have both? I buy a lot of ebooks in order to try out new authors and new genres, but when I see a particularly nice cover, such the one for "October Girls" by Scott Nicholson, I order the paperback as well.
"Disintegration" is great. So are "The Red Church," "Drummer Boy," etc. etc. and my alltime favorite "As I Die Lying" (LOL)

  38. Right on, Inanna! Exactly!

TheParoleOfficer - Amazon offered to set people up to meet others in towns nearby to be able to sit down and see/touch/meet the Kindle when it first came out. I did not go that route however. I was convinced that it was what I wanted so made a deal with my wife that we would get it for me for a Christmas present officially and went ahead and ordered it. Have not been at all sorry. I've been a Kindle salesman since I got mine and would gladly sit down with you and let you give it a spin if you live anywhere near Springfield, Ohio. Otherwise, try Amazon ... they may be able to set up a meeting for you. Stephen Windwalker has been my personal GURU when it comes to "all things Kindle," so you might want to check out his newsletter and blog at http://kindlehomepage.blogspot.com/
Very informative and though he is my GURU, we have not met, just online. Tell me how it goes (my e-mail is below).

Like Scott, I too like Thanksgiving (and Christmas!) the cold weather holidays. Having been a student and then a teacher for 30 years, they were always good, long breaks from school :). Our family really tries to get together at these times more than others. Also, when the weather gets cold - put something on!... but in warm weather there is a limit to how many clothes you can take off and still be socially acceptable, at least in Springfield. Another cold weather plus is the distinct lack of insects - they bug me. Most of all, when I start getting tired of the cold, it gets warmer and all the life comes back with a vengeance here in temperate Ohio. So I guess I love all the seasons when their time comes.

I like the interview format, Scott and Darlyn! Thank you for a pleasurable stop.

  48. Great interview!

For many years, I have been a paperback reader. When I got a Kindle for Christmas and used it, I fell in love with it! It's so convenient, especially when reading in bed! And I find myself reading much faster on the Kindle. To be honest, I'm having a hard time going back to a paperback.

Regarding the Kindle prices, it just really aggravates me to see the books being priced the same as paperbacks. I don't think it's fair and it bothers me a greater deal to see Kindle editions of much higher prices making it to the top 100. That just will encourage the publishers to think these prices are acceptable. I have been actively avoiding buying Kindle editions at a paperback price. (Yes, it's so frustrating that I have to wait until books of my favorite authors are priced lower than that of a paperback.)

    Great blog stop!

  51. Glad to see all you Kindle converts and blog tour newbies! Don't worry, there will be more to give away because you're going to help The Red Church, As I Die Lying, and Cursed! to crack the Top 100 this month. (Yeah, that would mean SIX kindle giveaways!)

LaQ and others, you can try the free Kindle for PC desktop--not as cool as the handheld but still gives you an idea. Plus you can buy a few cheap books (subliminal message--Disintegration and As I Die Lying) to try it out.

I like paperbacks too but I am not particular--all i care about is the story.

Sandra The Red Church is #350 or so--all it takes is one good day and it goes right up there. It's staying on a slow boil and just needs that lift. Put your positive energy to it. Let's pick a number. I think I'd like it at #79. So let's say "#79 The Red Church." We can bump a Patterson off the bestseller list and nobody will notice.

    Talk to you later,

    Scott

No, you don't have trouble putting on a mask...or fishnet stockings...or sexy lingerie! You do look great all dolled up...and i love your traditional Pilgrim look at Thanksgiving with your crisp, white pointy cap, full skirt and broad, stark-white apron. But I truly love your glamorous Barbie-esque holiday look! (And is it truly a coincidence that "Kindle" sounds like "Ken doll"??) You put the "HO" in "Ho ho Ho!" (The Groundhog Day outfit needs to go, though... It's a little "gamey", moth eaten and has disintegrated slowly over the years to now you look like some sort of giant fur-covered turd man instead of a groundhog... Hmmm...)

Let your freak flag fly! Whether it be dating goats, writing strange novels or wearing angoura sweaters (who knew you were such an Ed Wood fan?)!

And it's election day! For the BEST (and only?)USE of the words "tater tots" I've seen all year(and also the fact I'm enjoying "Skull Ring"), I vote for SCOTT NICHOLSON for the office of... I can't think of anything actually. Choose an office (Congressional Men's Room Attendant, maybe?) and i'll gladly vote for you.

Ignore me---it's been a long day and I'm just back from my trip. I'm super duper poopered out. (But you look FABULOUS!)

  72. @Teawench I agree with Neal, B&N will stay behind because they just don't have the "everything" that Amazon has--and they still cater to the high-priced bestsellers and totally ignored the army of acolyte authors Amazon opened their doors to. The Nook is a nice device but it will never have the range of content the Kindle will have.

@Jesse I have a proposal. I will have four cheap books in the Top 100 if we do things right, with your help. Let's show the world that cheap, good ebooks are bestsellers--and that bestsellers can be cheap! (Visualize Disintegration, The Red Church, Cursed!, and As I Die Lying on the bestseller list at the same time). I'd love to give away six Kindles.

@Christa that's my REAL hat for the garden (slightly exaggerated to hold by big head)

  79. I'm getting an e-reader for Christmas. Can't decide between Kindle and Nook. Free library books on the Nook are enticing. kristiedonelson(at)gmail(dot)com

  80. I think the prices for e-readers have declined a little, maybe not in my country (I live in Greece and everything is more expensive especially at the moment), but I have been following trends and some companies are trying to make their products a bit cheaper.

All in all, e-readers are very versatile and handy. You can read anywhere, anytime and it's lighter than holding an actual book in your hands.
I must admit I still love paperbacks, though! *g*

  82. What makes Thanksgiving your favorite holiday? Is it the food? family? Thinking of thankfulness?

  83. Another wonderful interview. I like that your current publishing model lets you write whatever you want. That must be incredibly liberating as an artist.

Of course if you write something that doesn't agree with your audience but you feel passionately about pursuing it -- couldn't you look for a different audience that would appreciate your new work?

    Thanks for the contest,

  85. @jessica I like Thanksgiving because of a day off in the middle of the week, food, and football. I am a generally thankful person because I have been truly blessed. Like Halloween, thanksgiving is year round for me!

  98. Been enjoying the tour, Scott, and I agree that it’s very refreshing you’re bringing new content to each post. Being an avid blogger, I understand what a challenge that is because sometimes new ideas for blog posts don’t always present themselves.

    Nice work.
